OUR STORY

Our roots go very deep into this community. For over 60 years, Community Church has been serving the Shreveport-Bossier area. During that 60 years, one family has pastored the church. This is unique and adds a layer of accountability, familiarity, and security that is rare in a world where many only last for a few years at a time in one location. That’s not to say that you are late to the party. In fact, we have grown more in the last 24 months as a church than we did in the ten years prior. God is doing great things, and we are all family no matter how long we have been together.

Pastors Rodney and Frances Duron (Community Church Pastors from 1957-1998)

Rodney and Frances Duron, began pastoring this church in 1957 when it was located in the Cedar Grove area of Shreveport. By 1976, bursting at the seams in Cedar Grove, the church body felt compelled to build a new building west of Shreveport on Buncombe Road at West 70th, the current Shreveport campus. That campus now houses two worship centers, Evangel Elementary School, Evangel Center for Autism, and the SCC Cafe and Kid City Play Area.

In 1998, Pastors Rodney and Frances Duron turned the reins of the church over to his son and daughter-in-law, Pastors Denny and DeAnza Duron.

Pastor Denny has continued to fulfill the vision of his father and the church family — to reach out to the needs of this community, to serve as Christ’s hands to both the influential and the needy. Over 100 ministries have been launched to serve the church and the community’s spiritual, physical, and relational needs.

Denny and his wife DeAnza, the parents of seven children, have a heart for the needs of couples and families, as well as for inner-city youth and the poor of our area. They desire for members of the church to develop spiritually while building lifelong friendships. Through the many diverse ministries in this church, thousands of lives have been transformed.

In the summer of 2006, a new name was established to better describe who we are… “Community Church”.

In January 2010, Family Worship Center merged with Shreveport Community Church forming Northpoint Community Church.  Pastors Al and Marla Eden, who led the Family Worship Center community for many years, have continued on as leaders in the nation, the state, and on the Northpoint campus. Pastors Craig and Cathy Johnson provided pastoral care to the campus until the spring of 2013. They continue on as elders and pastoral leadership.

In January, 2013, Pastors Phillip and Destiny Deas became the Lead Pastors for the Northpoint Campus. There are now two services every Sunday in English. Pastor Ricardo Zelaya has also launched a Spanish language service on Sundays that is growing rapidly. On the north edge of Bossier City’s most progressive area of town, Northpoint is making an incredible impact.

Through the years, the Community Church congregation has grown from 50 to over 1,800 people strong each weekend, with over 3,000 people who claim Community Church as their home church.

Because of our history, we have a deep belief in honoring our elders, empowering our youth, and supporting our families. This is a place where everyone is accepted regardless of background. It is a place where second chances are second nature and love is the language we choose as the background for every conversation and decision. Basically, Community Church is pastored by a family and really is a family!
